Safer Internet Day: 9 ways to ensure a safer messaging experience on WhatsApp

Telugu super news,February 9,2024:People share some of their most personal thoughts and information via messaging apps. WhatsApp safeguards all your messages with default end-to-end encryption – which means only you and the person you are chatting with can see them. Ahead of Safer Internet Day, here are some safety best practices and key features you can use to add additional layers of security to your conversations.

  1. Use Two-step verification to protect your account: Activate two-step verification to add more security to your WhatsApp account. Once enabled, you will be asked for a 6-digit PIN when resetting or verifying your account. This safeguards your account against phishing attacks and takeover attempts by scammers.
  2. Always use the official app: Make sure you’re using the latest version of the official WhatsApp. Your messages are only secure and private when using the official app. Make sure the logo looks correct, and the name of the app is just “WhatsApp”. Fake apps pose security risks, including sending spam and scams to others without your knowledge. If you’re on Android and simply want two accounts on your phone, you can now add a second account using one official app. (Learn more)
  3. Safeguard sensitive information with disappearing options: For greater privacy on your messaging experience, you can choose to send photos and media with View Once that will allow recipients to see the message only once without the option to save, forward, screenshot or share the message. View once is also available for voice notes, allowing them to be played just once. Switching off read recipients and using disappearing messages are other features to further protect chats that are important to you.
  4. Protect your most personal chats with Chat Lock: Add another layer of security to your intimate conversations with chat lock. It places a particular chat thread in a folder that can only be accessed by you. You can also create a unique password that’s different from your device password to protect chats that mention personal or financial information. In the event someone else gets access to your phone, chat lockwill keep your conversations safe from prying eyes.
  5. Be the best admin for your Group/Community: If you’re the admin for your work WhatsApp group or your neighbourhood community, you can safeguard it to ensure it’s a place for meaningful connection and conversations. You can decide who joins a group, restrict members’ permissions to make changes to your community’s subject, icon or description, even delete unwanted messages or remove members.
  6. Protect against scams: Scams can happen anywhere, via calls, email or messages. The first step to protecting yourself is to pause and think. If you receive a suspicious message that asks for personal information, verify if you know the contact, have common groups with them or is even coming from the country you’re in. WhatsApp asks if you want to Block an unknown contact right away. Even later, it is easy to report and block suspicious contacts to keep your account secure.
  7. Silence unknown callers: Calls from unknown numbers can disrupt your day. WhatsApp lets you silence unknown callers, helping automatically prevent spam and scam calls.
  8. Only link devices from trusted sources: WhatsApp lets you link up to four devices to your primary phone for an uninterrupted chat experience. However, when linking your device to a desktop using a QR code, make sure you type in the URL web.whatsapp.com or have the official app (from whatsapp.com/download or the app store). You can also review your linked devices by going to Settings>Linked Devices and logging out any device you don’t recognise.
  9. Take the Privacy checkup: Not sure about which privacy settings to use? Take the privacy check up on your WhatsApp app to know more about features that can keep your conversations protected and enable the features you need, all in one place.

WhatsApp launches ‘Check the Facts’ campaign to educate users on how to fight misinformation

Telugu super news,Delhi,November 28th, 2023: WhatsApp has launched an integrated safety campaign ‘Check the Facts’ in an effort to drive user-awareness around WhatsApp’s safety features and promote digital best practices that help prevent the spread of misinformation on the platform and empower people to take control of their messaging experience.

The month-long campaign highlights WhatsApp’s in-built product features and safety tools like block and report, forward labels that equip users to spot misinformation and prevent its spread further, and encourages people to verify information that sounds suspicious or inaccurate via fact-checking organizations on WhatsApp Channels. More details on the safety campaign can be found here: https://blog.whatsapp.com/check-the-facts

While there is no single action that can help prevent the spread of misinformation and fake news online, WhatsApp’s ‘Check the Facts’ campaign serves as a simple safety guide to fight misinformation.

1. Understand when a message is forwarded

WhatsApp has created a label for all forwarded messages and limits the number of times you can forward messages as a way to encourage users to reconsider before sharing. Paying careful attention to messages with “forward labels” also helps slow down the spread of rumours, viral messages, and fake news. For example, if a message has a double arrow icon and is labeled “forwarded many times,” it can only be forwarded to one chat at a time. If a message has a “forwarded label” you can forward it to up to five chats and only one group at a time.

2. Block and report suspicious accounts

WhatsApp provides a simple way for users to block accounts and make reports to WhatsApp if they encounter problematic messages, including those spreading misinformation. If you receive a message from an unknown sender, WhatsApp provides users the option to block them, with additional details such as groups in common, along with safety tools if you need to take action.

3. Follow fact-checking organization on WhatsApp Channels for accurate information

WhatsApp encourages users to double-check information that sounds suspicious or inaccurate – this is key to preventing the spread of misinformation. WhatsApp has partnered with 10 independent fact-checking organizations that help users to verify information in 13 languages. People can follow dedicated fact-checking organizations on WhatsApp Channels to receive verified and accurate updates. The fact-checking channels available include:

  1. Boom Fact-Check
  2. Fact Crescendo
  3. Factly
  4. India Today Fact Check
  5. Newschecker

WhatsApp launches new privacy features, partners with Anushka Sharma to highlight the power of private messaging

Telugu super news,India, June 20, 2023: New research from YouGov commissioned by WhatsApp reveals the power of a private message, as almost three quarters of women across the world (73%) and 68% of women in India say they would open up about their struggles if a friend reached out to them in private.

WhatsApp believes everyone should have a safe space to communicate with their family and friends, and so to encourage women to check in on each other privately, has partnered with actor Anushka Sharma to launch a series of mirrored messages appearing in private spaces – women’s restrooms – in malls across Delhi.

A message will appear on the restroom mirror when triggered by motion, alongside a QR code that offers suggestions for checking in via a private WhatsApp message. Afterwards, the message vanishes without a trace, just like a Disappearing Message on WhatsApp.

Here’s a look at how it works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXHqaCWsaWI

Commenting on the launch of the campaign, Actor, Anushka Sharma, said,“Women don’t always feel safe to speak up about issues they’re facing, however they tend to open up with a friend who reaches out to them, privately. I’ve partnered with WhatsApp to drive awareness around the importance of having a secure space for women to confide in others and how a private conversation can be empowering for women to speak up and seek help when their safety and well-being might be at risk. I truly feel it is important to check in on a friend, colleague, loved one, especially if you haven’t heard from them in a while and that one private message can be a lifeline. I am happy to be a part of this campaign that can be a safe space for women to open up.”

Sandhya Devanathan, Vice President of Meta India, said, “At WhatsApp, we believe protecting users’ personal conversations with their family and friends is the most important type of privacy we can give them. We’re thrilled to add two new privacy-first features that further strengthen and add to WhatsApp’s built-in layers of protection to offer users a safe space to have their most private conversations. Through the series of mirrored messages, we’re spreading the word on the importance of checking in on a friend or a loved one, encouraging women to reach out and support each other to speak up. We hope it helps start important conversations on WhatsApp, which always start with a single private message.”

To coincide with the launch, Mark Zuckerberg has announced a new privacy feature, Silence Unknown Callers, which helps to screen out spam, scams and calls from unknown people for greater control over your calls. We’re also rolling out Privacy Checkup, a step-by-step feature that guides you through the important privacy settings on WhatsApp and helps you choose the right level of protection, all in one place.

WhatsApp launches new Security Center to further strengthen its commitment to user safety

Telugu super news,Hyderabad,Juna 2,2023:Today, WhatsApp is launching a new global Security Center which acts as a one-stop shop for users to learn more about how to protect themselves against spammers and unwanted contact.

WhatsApp has created this page to build awareness about the various safety measures and in-built product features that empower users to take control of their safety as well as more information on the ‘behind-the-scenes’ technology we use to run a simple, reliable, private and safe service.

The Security Center will be available in English and 10 Indian languages (Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Marathi, Urdu and Gujarati).

You can visit the WhatsApp security center here: https://www.whatsapp.com/security

Protecting personal messages with end-to-end encryption is one of the best lines of defence against scammers and fraudsters and in addition to that WhatsApp is consistently working

on new and innovative ways to enhance people’s safety and privacy.

The features highlighted in the Security Center are just some of the ways we help keep users safe and secure. It informs users about the the layers of privacy that WhatsApp provides and lists some top tips to give users more control over their WhatsApp account, including:

  • Two-step verification – to avoid account takeovers and to provide another layer of account security
  • Scams – how to spot common scams and what you can do if you receive an unwanted message including our block and report tools.
  • Official WhatsApp – information on how to avoid fake versions of WhatsApp that pose serious risks to your privacy and security
  • Group controls – reminders about checking your preferences about who can add you to groups

As an industry leader among end-to-end encrypted messaging services, WhatsApp has been taking a holistic approach to promoting user safety through consistent investments in product innovations, as well as driving consumer awareness around online best practices that help keep users safe.

Last month, WhatsApp launched an integrated safety campaign ‘Stay Safe with WhatsApp’ in India highlighting product features that empower users to take control of their online safety and ensure a safer messaging experience. The campaign focuses on educating users about WhatsApp’s safety features and tools like Two-Step Verification, Block and Report and Privacy controls that equip people with the necessary safeguards to help protect them from online scams, frauds and account compromising threats.

WhatsApp’s safety campaign educates users on how to stay safe from scams

In an effort to drive awareness around online safety, WhatsApp’s recent marketing campaign titled ‘Stay safe with WhatsApp’ aims to educate users on product features and safety measures on WhatsApp that empower users to take control of their safety and security – online.

User safety being at the core of WhatsApp, the company is raising awareness about its product features and tools that can help users stay safe from online scams and frauds. While scammers can be convincing and persistent, it is important for consumers to remain vigilant.

The safety campaign reinforces the message of staying safe and exercising caution to ensure a safer messaging experience. Here are some key safety features on WhatsApp and best practices for users to stay safe from messaging scams and to protect their friends and family.

  1. Turn on Two-Step Verification: WhatsApp allows users to add an extra layer of security to their account by enabling the Two-Step Verification feature, which requires a six-digit PIN when resetting and verifying your WhatsApp account. Two-step verification safeguards your account against phishing attacks and takeover attempts by scammers.
  1. Block and Report suspicious accounts: Reporting suspicious messages is an important step to effectively combat scams. For instance, WhatsApp provides a convenient way to report suspicious accounts. If the message is from an unknown person asking for unusual information or with an odd request, contact the organisation or person directly for clarification and, in the meantime, avoid sending any money or sharing any personal information. Unlike traditional SMS or other platforms, WhatsApp gives you the option to block and report the sender right away to break the cycle of scams. Users may also receive calls from unknown international or domestic phone numbers, do not answer these calls and block and report such accounts.
  1. Adjust Group privacy settings: WhatsApp’s privacy setting and group invite system allow users to decide who can add them to groups, increasing user privacy and preventing people from adding you to groups you don’t want to be a part of. If you find yourself in a group chat that seems suspicious, you can choose to exit the group and report it.
  1. Privacy settings to control who sees your personal details: Users can control their personal details such as – Profile Photo, Last Seen, Online status, About, Status, and who sees it –  everyone, contacts only, select contacts, or no one. You can also control your online presence by selecting who can and can’t see when you’re online, for the times you want to keep your online presence private. Keeping your personal details visible to only your contacts can help safeguard your account against bad actors.
  1. Do not share your personal information with anyone: We transact within the online world daily and thus protecting our personal information and privacy is essential when using the internet. Avoid sharing sensitive information such as your address, phone number, passwords, credit/ debit card numbers, and bank account information.
  1. Stop and think before you act: Scammers often create a false sense of urgency, tricking unsuspecting individuals into giving up sensitive information. They also use impersonation (pretending to a person or organisation you would trust) and often send fake phishing links. When you receive a text or request that looks suspicious, don’t act right away. Stop and take five before you respond, think if this an unusual request, and avoid clicking suspicious, unverified links.

Simple ways to effectively communicate with businesses on WhatsApp

WhatsApp’s

Telugu super news,Hyderabad,April 12,2023:“WhatsApp the details to me!” – a phrase we often use with our friends and family, and now with businesses too. Gone are the days when we waited for a customer care executive on long phone calls or physically visited a store to know more about a product.

Whether it is planning your next holiday, checking your bank balance, or details about an insurance policy, paying utility bills, or tracking the delivery of your recent purchase, everything can now be done on WhatsApp. In fact, according to a 2022 Kantar study, 75% of online adults in India say they are more likely to do business with or purchase from a company that they can contact via messaging.

With all kinds of businesses on WhatsApp that can help you accomplish much throughout the day, here are some quick and easy ways to exercise your choice and effectively engage with businesses on WhatsApp:

WhatsApp’s
  1. Opt-in: As a user, you are in complete control of whom you want to talk to or message. Look for an opt-in prompt when initiating a conversation with a brand. WhatsApp wants businesses to get an opt-in from users before starting an engagement. Opt-in can be obtained in a number of ways – for example, through the website, in a store or even directly over WhatsApp.
  2. Getting Started: Communicating with a business is as simple as saying, “Hi” on the registered business account number. Once you have initiated a conversation you can access information the same way you chat with your friends and family.
  3. Communicate with businesses of all sizes and across sectors: Whether it is to access a transit solution such as booking a cab or buying metro tickets on the go, a shopping experience on WhatsApp such as ordering groceries or shopping from your favourite brands or banking solutions such as checking your balance, among others – all within a WhatsApp chat thread.
  4. Explore/Enjoy a host of services and solutions: Once you have initiated a conversation with a business, you can explore the unique solutions they have built on WhatsApp or services they offer like brand information, real-time updates on new products and promotional offers, get grievances addressed in real-time, and browse through product Catalogues to get product details, all on WhatsApp.
  5. Block and Report: Are you getting too many updates from a business or getting the information you didn’t sign up for? You can block accounts at any time and provide a reason why. This helps WhatsApp to understand what conversations are valuable to users and provides a way to share feedback with the business or take action – including banning an account if needed.
  6. Opt-out easily with just a tap: WhatsApp has recently added the ability for businesses to create a simple way for customers to opt out of receiving certain types of messages, for example, several brands have built-in options right within the chat – like a ‘START’ or ‘STOP’ button/s. Choosing this option notifies the business that you’d not like to receive updates from the business anymore.
